Membership
Membership The membership of the Association includes both practising and non-practising Medical Laboratory personnel in private and public health institutions. These include assistants, technicians, technologists, graduate scientists and doctoral level scientists. Membership is open to Point of Care Testers, College students and individuals and companies working in the medical laboratory industry.
MAMLS members become part of a larger network of Medical Laboratory Science professionals which provides an atmosphere of interaction, collaboration and information sharing. Through the connections of MAMLS with international partners, members have access to travel scholarships to attend high profile meetings and exchange programmes across the globe.
Classification of Membership
Membership is open to all persons interested in Medical Laboratory Science. There are it has seven categories of members
Individual Member
Membership in this category is open to qualified Medical Laboratory Scientists from Institutions recognised both by MAMLS and Medical Council of Malawi.
The basic qualification for members consists of a minimum training period of two years and a degree, diploma or certificate in Biomedical Sciences/Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences/Technology from a recognised institution. The course should have covered both theoretical and practical aspects of the following minimum core subjects/ modules:
- Haematology
- Blood Transfusion Sciences
- Medical Microbiology
- Parasitology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Histopathology/cytopathology
- Immunology
Corporate Member
Companies or organizations that wish to support the profession and promote the interests of the MAMLS may join as Corporate Members. Corporate Members will be expected to assist MAMLS financially with important projects. Full recognition will be afforded to these members.
Honorary Member
Membership in this category may be offered by the Association to non-medical laboratory professionals with a close connection to MAMLS and who have rendered distinguished service to the Association,
International Member
Membership in this category is open to any Medical Laboratory Professional who is interested in the Association or its activities and resides outside Malawi.
Retired Members
Members of the Association who are at least sixty (60) years old may be accorded retired member status upon application to the Association but still wish to be members.
Associate Member
This category is open to any professional qualified individuals in fields related to laboratory medicine. e.g. Point of Care Testers.
Student Member
This category is open to any individual interested in participating in and benefiting from the stated activities of the Association who;
(i) is enrolled in an educational institute and/or
(ii) is employed in the industry as a trainee
MAMLS promotes academic excellence and progression and provides a forum where students can access educational support.
